State Rep. Cecil Brockman, a Democrat from High Point, has resigned following charges of statutory rape and indecent liberties with a minor.

Brockman said he’s stepping down to focus on his legal defense, while House Speaker Destin Hall said the resignation “spares the House from a difficult expulsion process and brings closure to this troubling chapter.

Brockman’s seat will remain vacant until Democratic leaders in Guilford County appoint a replacement to serve the remainder of his term.

Police are searching for a 24-year-old man accused of killing his grandmother and stabbing a Craven County deputy before fleeing into the woods, prompting a multi-county manhunt.

Deputies say he was spotted on a trail camera near Vanceboro, and the search has now expanded into Beaufort County.

Residents are urged to check surveillance footage and call 911 with any information.
