The Roundup

Article Icon 1Boliek Names Board Appointees

State Auditor Dave Boliek nominated three Republicans and two Democrats to the State Board of Elections on Thursday, giving the board a Republican majority for the first time since 2016.

The Republican nominees are Francis De Luca, Robert Anthony Rucho, and Stacy Clyde Eggers IV. The Democratic nominees are Siobhan O’Duffy Millen and Jeff Carmon, both of whom are current board members and previously served alongside Eggers.

The appointments were made amidst ongoing deliberations over the constitutionality of a law that transferred the power to nominate election board members from the governor to the state auditor.

Crews fully contained a 150-acre wildfire in Brunswick County late Friday, with no reported injuries or fatalities.

Multiple fire departments, law enforcement, and the Forest Service remained on the scene as the wildfire was contained but not fully extinguished. Officials were also concerned that winds could reignite the fire or spark new ones.

A state of emergency prompted evacuations before being lifted late Friday; by Saturday, local roads were still closed, and a Code Red air quality was issued due to the wildfire. A burn ban is also in effect for unincorporated areas.

Article Icon 1 Star Wars Day Around the State

The force is strong around the state on this Star Wars Day. Theaters and towns across the state are celebrating May the 4th with movie showings and family-friendly activities.

Downtown Cary Park is hosting Celebrate Star Wars, featuring a scavenger hunt, a costume contest, trivia, LEGO building, Jedi training, and food trucks. The event is open to the public and family-friendly.

Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh will have character appearances, toy giveaways, and a photo booth. Fans can also catch Episode IV: A New Hope for free as part of the ongoing “Movies Under the Stars” series in Chapel Hill.
