NC Reacts to SCOTUS Decisions

Reactions to Friday’s Supreme Court rulings in North Carolina were mixed, with birthright citizenship sparking debate while other decisions drew bipartisan support.

NC State Professor Steven Green said the ruling in the Trump v. Casa, the birthright citizenship case, emphasized that a single federal judge “cannot make nationwide policy” rather than signaling support for Trump’s decision.

Attorney General Jeff Jackson opposed the Trump v. Casa ruling as unconstitutional but joined bipartisan support for decisions upholding the Affordable Care Act’s preventive care and expanding FCC rural internet funding.

“I’m grateful to the president for defending preventive health care for all Americans and to the Supreme Court for upholding the law,” Jackson said.

Stein Vetoes REINS Act

Gov. Josh Stein vetoed the REINS Act on Friday after it passed the Senate 26-17 and the House 70-44.

Supporters of the bill proposed tiered oversight for costly regulations, aiming to ease burdens on businesses and allow more freedom from certain compliance requirements.

Detractors say the bill could delay responses in environmental and public health matters, backing Gov. Stein’s view that it adds red tape to agency decision-making.

North Carolina is one of several states that have considered the REINS Act.

Seven Hospitalized at CDIA

Seven crew members were hospitalized after experiencing symptoms from inhaling fumes aboard an American Airlines flight at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

The crew, bound for Los Angeles, reported an odor that medics identified as jet fuel. Officials said six have minor symptoms, and one is in critical condition.

American Airlines said the jet will be removed from service and inspected.
