Article Icon 1Stein Vetos ICE and Concealed Carry Bills

North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein vetoed three GOP-backed bills Friday, rejecting increased Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) cooperation and a measure allowing permitless concealed carry for those 18 and older.

House Bill 318 requires law enforcement to verify detainees’ legal status and transfer undocumented individuals to ICE. Senate Bill 153 would require ICE training for state agencies and restrict social services to legal citizens. Stein said both bills would create unconstitutional detentions and strain law enforcement resources.

Stein vetoed Senate Bill 50, which allows permitless concealed carry for ages 18 and older because he believes it undermines gun safety by eliminating training and background checks.

Senate Republicans’ supermajority enables veto overrides, but House Republicans need one Democrat’s vote to override the vetoes.

Article Icon 1Video Alleges UNCW DEI Noncompliance

A June 19 video from Accuracy in Media shows UNC-Wilmington employees discussing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policy changes last September, weeks after UNC campuses were ordered to cut or reassign DEI roles.

The LGBTQIA Resource Center coordinator said she reassigned staff after being ordered to reduce her team from 15 to four, while a coordinator at the Upperman Center noted that some schools created ‘new-ish positions’ for DEI employees.

UNCW administrators said Thursday they are aware of the video and will take “swift action to look into these matters further.”

The UNCW video follows two other videos released by Accuracy in Media showing administrators at UNC-Asheville and Western Carolina University, who were both recently fired, discussing how their universities had skirted the policy.

The 88th American Gold Star Mothers National Convention, which started Thursday in Raleigh and ends today, brought together 100 mothers who lost a child in military service.

The event, which took place at the Sheraton Raleigh Hotel in honor of fallen heroes and in support of active-duty personnel, kicked off with the women packing 700 care packages for service members at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro.

Additional convention events included a memorial service, business meeting, and banquet. Attendees were also encouraged to explore downtown Raleigh’s shops, restaurants, and museums on Saturday.

Attendees say the conference helps memorialize their son or daughter’s service to the country, with one stating, “We’re continuing their service by serving.”
