The Roundup

Article Icon 1Holiday Travel Gets Cheaper

The White House says families will see the cheapest Labor Day gas prices since 2020, crediting expanded domestic energy production.

GasBuddy lists the top 10 North Carolina spots, with Fayetteville having several stations at $2.48 per gallon.

President Trump’s administration points to lower hotel rates and airfare alongside cheaper gas, saying the trend shows his policies are cutting travel costs.

Article Icon 1USDA Reviews Roadless Rule in Croatan Forest

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a public comment period on its plan to rescind the 2001 Roadless Rule, which restricts roadbuilding across nearly 60 million acres of national forest land.

North Carolina’s Croatan National Forest is one of the areas covered. The 160,000-acre forest protects longleaf pine savannas, endangered species like the red-cockaded woodpecker, and Carteret County’s water resources.

Road construction and logging could expand in these areas if the rule is revoked. USDA officials say the change would give local managers more flexibility, while conservation groups warn it would threaten habitats and water quality.
