Article Icon 1Study Shows NC Accent Disappearing

Research shows North Carolina’s traditional Southern accent is fading as an influx of workers and migrants from across the globe reshape the state’s linguistic landscape.

The construction of Research Triangle Park and the growth of the state’s tech industry accelerated the decline of the regional accent, as immigration reshaped speech patterns statewide.

Overall, the classical Southern accent peaked with baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964, then declined among Generation X, born between 1965 and 1980, and younger generations.
