The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences announced the discovery of a new dinosaur species, Nanotyrannus lethaeus, once believed to be a juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex.

Researchers noted its skeletal features, like more teeth and fewer tail vertebrae, distinguished it from the T. rex. Gov. Josh Stein praised the find, saying it’s “the biggest discovery in the last decade.”

The fossil of Nanotyrannus had been on display at the museum as part of the “Dueling Dinosaurs” exhibit. The museum received the fossils, which include a Triceratops fossil, in 2020 after being discovered in Montana.

The Dueling Dinosaurs exhibit opened in 2024, and visitors can get a firsthand glimpse into the discovery of the new species.
