Article Icon 1Stein Surveys Chantal Damage

Gov. Josh Stein met with Chapel Hill leaders and business owners Friday to survey Tropical Storm Chantal damage, visiting hard-hit areas including Eastgate and Camelot Village.

The visit comes after Stein declared a state of emergency for 13 counties, allowing government officials to take further steps in storm recovery, which could include federal aid.

Town leaders in Chapel Hill say that the storm caused over $26 million in damage, including $17 million to Eastgate and over $5 million to local parks and trails. Camelot Village also experienced over $3 million in damage.

Article Icon 1Price Gouging Laws Take Effect

Attorney General Jeff Jackson announced the state’s price gouging law is now in effect to protect those impacted by the devastation of Chantal.

The announcement came Thursday after Gov. Josh Stein declared a state of emergency in 13 counties—the price gouging law automatically activates with such a declaration. The laws are meant to dissuade businesses from raising prices arbitrarily to maximize profit, though it doesn’t mean businesses aren’t able to raise prices to offset rising costs.

North Carolinians who suspect price gouging can report it to the state Department of Justice on their website or by calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM. The price-gouging laws will be in effect for thirty days.
