U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested four men outside a Mecklenburg County Courthouse, despite apparent communications issues with the sheriff’s department.

The arrests were made by three plainclothes officers driving white, unmarked SUVs. Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden, who was notified by witnesses, said he arrived in time to see the arrests.

ICE officials said they had placed immigration detainers on two of those arrested, but that the sheriff failed to hold them.

McFadden’s office said none of the names of those arrested had been processed through his facilities.
