Article Icon 1Trump, Stein Clash Over Helene Aid

Federal funding for Hurricane Helene recovery in western North Carolina remains a point of conflict as the storm’s first anniversary approaches.

After Gov. Josh Stein requested additional disaster aid, the White House called him “unfit to run a state,” arguing that previous relief efforts under President Trump were sufficient.

Stein responded that current support—about $1.61 billion—is far below the level of federal assistance other states received after major storms. He is asking Congress to approve an $11.5 billion supplemental aid package.

Article Icon 1Day Care Fails to Call 911 After Snake Bite

A 4-year-old boy was bitten by a copperhead while playing outside at a Stony Point day care, but staff allegedly did not call 911.

Day care staff initially suggested the injury was a splinter or broken bone. They later admitted it was a snake bite and said they had killed the copperhead on the playground.

The boy’s guardian took him to the hospital. Family members are questioning why emergency help wasn’t called and whether other parents were informed.

Article Icon 1Two NC Cities Ranked Safest in US

Charlotte and Raleigh ranked among SmartAsset’s top 10 safest large cities for 2025, coming in at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

The study compared 50 major cities using per-capita rates of violent and property crime, fatal car crashes, drug overdose deaths, and excessive drinking.

SmartAsset says safety can influence where people live, work, and invest, giving both cities a clear, data-backed advantage as they grow.
