Article Icon 1Catastrophic Flooding Shuts Down Western NC

More than 10 people have died in North Carolina due to Tropical Storm Helene’s catastrophic impact on Western North Carolina, an area that received more than 2 feet of rain Friday.

The storm is being referred to as “North Carolina’s Katrina” and characterized by Buncombe County officials as “biblical flooding.” President Joe Biden has declared North Carolina a major disaster area.

North Carolina swiftwater and helicopter crews have rescued more than 200 people since Thursday. Landslides and flooding cut off internet and cell service to nearly all of western North Carolina, and even impacted the Outer Banks.

Flooding also forced the indefinite closure of Interstate 40—parts of which completely washed away—along with 400 other roads across the state. NCDOT says “all roads in Western North Carolina should be considered closed.”

Even after being downgraded to a tropical storm, Helene churned out at least four confirmed tornadoes Friday in North Carolina, with warnings issued across the state for other funnel cloud sightings.

Two confirmed EF-1 strength tornadoes touched down in Vance and Durham counties that uprooted trees and damaged buildings.

Rocky Mount suffered a 100-yard-wide EF-3 tornado with 140 mph winds that traveled for a quarter mile, damaging 14 buildings and multiple vehicles.

Residents of Granville County and Oxford shared videos of tornadoes in their area, with the Oxford twister later confirmed as an EF1 with peak wind speeds of 105 mph.

A Charlotte resident captured this video of a funnel cloud Thursday morning in the Steele Creek division.

Article Icon 1 Robinson Suffers Burns, Resumes Campaigning

Just one day after announcing new campaign staff hires, Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson was hospitalized for second-degree burns suffered Friday during a campaign appearance at the Mayberry Truck Show in Mount Airy.

A spokesperson said Robinson was in good spirits and expected to resume campaigning Saturday, but didn’t offer details on the extent of his injuries.

Robinson says he will offer his full cooperation and transparency in answering questions about a CNN report alleging he made lewd and racist comments on a pornographic website more than 10 years ago.

Robinson has denied the allegations and hired a legal team.

The Republican Governors Association is pulling back its support of Robinson. A North Carolina ad buy for his campaign expired and the group says no additional ad placements are planned.
