Article Icon 1Bird Flu Confirmed in Three NC Counties

Three flocks of birds in Union, Rutherford, and Guilford counties tested positive for bird flu, which officials say spreads through migrating birds and poses little risk to humans but is highly contagious to poultry.

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture said the infections are likely tied to wild ducks, geese, and swans passing through the state this season. Since 2022, wildlife officials have detected the virus in more than 400 wild birds and one black bear.

State veterinarian Dr. Mike Martin urged poultry owners to report sudden flock deaths and follow strict biosecurity measures. Infected birds do not enter the food supply, and the virus is not considered a food safety threat.

Methodist University earned preliminary accreditation for its new Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine, North Carolina’s first new M.D. program in nearly 50 years, set to enroll its first class in summer 2026.

University leaders called the milestone a “transformational milestone” for the region. More than 50 faculty and staff have already been hired, and plans include collaboration with over 200 clinical instructors from Cape Fear Valley Health.

An N.C. State University study projects the school will boost annual local spending by $72 million and create 850 jobs. The program aims to train future physicians who stay to serve Southeastern North Carolina.

Article Icon 1Apex Opens New Greenway Extensions

Apex celebrated Great Trails State Day by unveiling two new greenway extensions—Beaver Creek and Middle Creek—that add more than two miles of new paths and connect neighborhoods to downtown.

Town Manager Randy Vosburg called the effort “money well spent,” noting the $48 million package also funded Pleasant Park and the Apex Senior Center.

The new trails link Apex Nature Park, Kelly Road Park, and nearby Holly Springs, with future plans to connect to the American Tobacco Trail. The voter-approved projects have been in the works since 2017.

Unknown Number Calling? It’s Not Random

The BBC caught scam call center workers on hidden cameras as they laughed at the people they were tricking. One worker bragged about making $250k from victims. The disturbing truth? Scammers don’t pick phone numbers at random. They buy your data from brokers.

Once your data is out there, it’s not just calls. It’s phishing, impersonation, and identity theft. That’s why we recommend Incogni: They delete your info from the web, monitor for new threats, and keep erasing your data as new risks appear.
