Article Icon 1Chantal Cuts a Path Through NC

Tornado warnings, flash floods, and gusty winds plagued much of North Carolina Sunday as Tropical Storm Chantal took her time churning across the state.

Tornado warnings impacted multiple counties across North Carolina, and a flood watch remained in effect through Sunday night across Central North Carolina, where more than 5 inches of rain was possible. Areas west of I-95 faced isolated flooding throughout the day.

The storm, downgraded to a tropical depression as the day went on, created rough waves and heightened rip current threats at Wilmington-area beaches, prompting 15 rescues since Friday.

Duke Energy technicians and tree crews were on alert throughout the day as the storm triggered outages in some areas. You can follow Chantal’s track here.

Changes to how the U.S. Postal Service processes mail are creating backlogs and may explain why over 74,000 delayed letters, flats, and packages were discovered during an Inspector General’s audit in April.

The audit focused on post offices in Charlotte and Concord, as well as a distribution center in Gastonia. It revealed 19,374 delayed letters and flats, along with 54,880 delayed packages.

Miriam Bell, president of the Charlotte Area Local American Postal Workers Union, said mail that was formerly processed locally is now being trucked hours away for processing at a regional facility, then sometimes trucked to another area for further processing.

“That, in my opinion, is what’s causing a lot of delays,” Bell said, adding that Priority Mail deliveries now take three to seven days instead of two to three. She also previously blamed the delays on “inexperienced station managers and understaffing.”

Article Icon 1Duke Scientists Help Create Aging Rate Tool

Scientists at Duke, Harvard, and the University of Otago in New Zealand used data from a study of 1,037 New Zealanders born between 1972 and 1973 to develop a tool that measures how fast someone is aging.

The Dunedin Study, named after the city where the study’s participants were born, collected health metrics every few years, including blood pressure, body mass index, glucose, cholesterol, lung and kidney function, gum recession, and tooth decay.

By analyzing 20 years of data, the team created a score reflecting each individual’s biological aging rate. This score informed the development of DunedinPACNI, a tool trained to estimate aging speed from a single brain MRI scan taken at age 45.

DunedinPACNI shows promise in predicting risks for dementia and chronic diseases years before symptoms appear, potentially enabling early interventions to slow aging and improve health outcomes.
