Second Quake Shakes Western NC

A second magnitude 2.0 earthquake struck western North Carolina Sunday morning, about 24 hours after another 2.0 quake near Canton on Saturday.

Sunday’s quake was centered about 5 miles east-northeast of Weaverville and 9 miles north-northeast of Asheville, at a depth of about 2 miles.

Western North Carolina lies near the East Tennessee Seismic Zone, where faults within Appalachian bedrock occasionally produce minor earthquakes.

Nearly 30 earthquakes have been recorded in North Carolina this year. The strongest was a magnitude 2.7 quake near Dillsboro in March.

NC Schools See Safety Gains

North Carolina schools have generally reported fewer criminal offenses over the past two decades, despite increases in drug possession and assaults on school personnel.

Schools have expanded anonymous reporting, behavioral threat assessment teams, mental health training, and weapons detection systems as officials look for additional ways to improve campus safety.

Weapons-possession offenses fell to 1,875 in 2024-25, less than half the 3,925 reported in 2006-07. WRAL found recent declines were steeper in some districts using weapons detection systems, though those districts generally had lower rates to begin with.

A recent state student survey found fewer students carried weapons or fought at school. Students interviewed by WRAL generally said they felt safe but had mixed views on added security.

All-Star Race Returns to North Wilkesboro

The NASCAR All-Star Race will return to North Wilkesboro Speedway on May 23, 2027, after a one-year move to Dover Motor Speedway.

The historic 0.625-mile track will host its first NASCAR tripleheader May 21-23, featuring Craftsman Truck, O’Reilly Auto Parts, and Cup Series racing.

The O’Reilly series will race at North Wilkesboro for the first time since 1985, while Sunday’s All-Star Race winner will again collect $1 million.

The weekend will also mark North Wilkesboro Speedway’s 80th anniversary, continuing the track’s revival after NASCAR racing returned there in 2023.
