Article Icon 1Budd Proposes Supersonic Civilian Flights

U.S. Sen. Ted Budd of North Carolina and U.S. Rep. Troy Nehls of Texas introduced a bill Tuesday calling for the legalization of supersonic civilian flights in the United States.

The Supersonic Aviation Modernization Act would require the Federal Aviation Administration to issue and revise regulations legalizing civil supersonic flight—including both private and commercial aircraft—as long as sonic booms do not reach the ground.

The proposal is supported by Sens. Thom Tillis, Mike Lee, and Tim Sheehy. Boom Supersonic, which manufactures supersonic jets and is constructing a “Superfactory” in Greensboro, also supports the legislation.

The announcement comes just days after California-based JetZero named Greensboro as one of three finalists for its new factory. JetZero is developing a “blended wing” aircraft that is 50% more fuel efficient and offers more personal space for passengers.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) released information Wednesday on the Monday arrest of illegal immigrant Adrian Ojeda-Calvillo near his home in East Charlotte—not near a school, as reported by one principal.

ICE said Ojeda-Calvillo of Mexico has a lengthy criminal history that includes convictions for domestic violence, assault on a female, robbery, kidnapping, and breaking and entering.

Charlotte East Language Academy’s principal originally informed parents that the arrest took place near the school drop-off line after a parent released a video showing agents in the middle of a road. ICE disputed this account, stating the arrest took place without incident on a public sidewalk near Albemarle Road and Jenkins Drive, and was unrelated to the school.

ICE is urging the public to “avoid spreading rumors or misinformation that causes unnecessary panic in the immigrant community.”

Left untreated, it may lead to serious infections.
