CNBC released its Top States for Business Rankings 2025, revealing the Tar Heel State as No. 1 due to its economy, “world-class workforce,” and corporate hospitality.

North Carolina took the No. 3 spot in the economy category behind only Florida (No. 1) and Texas (No. 2). The state’s gross domestic product grew by 3.7% last year, the fifth-strongest in the country, and it added more than 60,000 jobs.

This year’s top five is rounded out by Texas (No. 2), Florida (No. 3), Virginia (No. 4), and Ohio (No. 5). North Carolina previously claimed the No. 1 spot in 2022 and 2023, and was runner-up in 2021 and 2024.

UNC Health and Duke Health announced Thursday that southern Apex will be the site of their joint 500-bed children’s hospital, expected to break ground in 2027.

The multibillion-dollar project will include 1.6 million square feet of floor space, a 70-bed pediatric inpatient behavioral health hospital, an ambulatory surgical center, outpatient clinics, specialty care services, and administrative offices.

Construction is expected to take six years.
