Article Icon 117 Arrested in Drug Trafficking Operation

Multiple local, state, and federal agencies worked with the Wake County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday to arrest 17 people in Wake Forest who were involved in a large-scale drug trafficking operation.

Charges ranged from possession and/or trafficking of opium, heroin, and cocaine, to possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance. There were also several charges of possession of firearms.

Agents were seen bringing out multiple guns and evidence bags from the home in a joint effort that also involved the Drug Enforcement Administration; US Marshals Service; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; State Bureau of Investigation; Wake County District Attorney’s Office; the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office; and police from Raleigh, Wake Forest, and Henderson County.

The investigation is ongoing.

Article Icon 1Senate Targets AG’s Anti-Trump Suits

Republican Senators advanced a bill Wednesday to ban North Carolina’s attorney general from participating in lawsuits targeting presidential executive orders.

Senate Bill 58 made it through its first committee Wednesday as Republicans attempt to prevent Attorney General Jeff Jackson, a Democrat who previously served in Congress, from continuing to join other states in suing over President Trump’s executive orders.

Altogether, Jackson has filed four federal lawsuits against Trump’s executive orders to end birthright citizenship, freeze federal grant funding, and prevent the federal government from sharing personal and financial data with the Department of Government Efficiency.

The bill now heads to the Senate Rules Committee.

Article Icon 1Buncombe County Sees Tourism Surge

The Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority is reporting a strong start to 2025 as the region heads into its prime tourism season.

Hotel demand and occupancy levels are up from January 2024, and revenue from attractions is up 4% from pre-Hurricane Helene levels.

Recent events that contributed to the economic boost include a Billy Strings concert series, which brought in $15.7 million, and RAD Fest, which led to a 400% spending increase in the River Arts District.

The opening of two I-40 lanes near the Tennessee border this Saturday is also expected to boost tourism in the area.

Tourism spending is crucial to Buncombe County’s economy, which received the third-highest amount of tourism dollars in the state in 2023 based on a state report.
