Charlotte Could Host Future Superbowl

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell called Charlotte “Super Bowl quality” during a Thursday night visit to the city. Panthers owner David Tepper pitched the Super Bowl idea directly to Goodell during a fireside chat that capped a day of stadium news.

The visit capped a day in which Tepper added $500 million to Bank of America Stadium’s renovations, pushing the total cost to $1.3 billion through 2030.

The expanded project adds a 4,400-seat music venue and a reimagined “Charlotte corridor,” alongside a long-term extension of the stadium’s naming-rights deal with Bank of America.

Goodell said Charlotte’s downtown “is built for” the NFL Draft, though hotel capacity remains a hurdle for a Super Bowl bid. Panthers President Kristi Coleman said the renovations “help your resume” with the league.

Cary Residents Grill Leaders on Spending

Hundreds of Cary residents packed Town Hall Thursday night to confront town leaders over a state auditor’s report alleging a culture of excessive spending.

One resident called the council’s response “pathetic,” while another accused members of being complicit in accepting free meals, car service and custom sunglasses purchased with town credit cards.

An independent report presented at the meeting echoed the state’s findings, citing the elimination of an internal auditor position and large purchases approved without council sign-off. Attorney John Cooke of Womble Bond Dickinson said greater transparency “would have come to your attention quicker.”

The council adopted a new anti-retaliation policy for whistleblowers and launched an online dashboard to track reforms. Council Member Carissa Kohn-Johnson pledged closer oversight, telling residents it’s also her job “to sit here and take the heat.”

NC Traces Outbreak to Herbs

North Carolina health officials say parsley and cilantro are increasingly linked to a statewide surge in cyclospora infections that has already surpassed the past two years combined.

The state Department of Health and Human Services has logged more than 560 cases of the parasitic illness since May 1, with most concentrated in Wake County. Officials said this week the increase qualifies as a statewide outbreak, though no single source has been confirmed.

Dr. Carl Williams of NCDHHS said lettuce, parsley, and cilantro “pop up frequently” in patient interviews but cautioned that isn’t proof of the cause. The state’s outbreak does not appear connected to a separate multistate cluster tied to Taco Bell.

Health officials recommend cooking the herbs fully rather than relying on washing, since rinsing does not guarantee the parasite is removed. Symptoms include severe, sometimes explosive diarrhea.
