Answer: The U.S. Army’s first two airborne divisions were the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. The 82nd, originally an infantry unit based at Camp Gordon, Georgia, was redesignated as the first airborne division on Aug. 15, 1942, and today is based at Fort Bragg. The 101st was also activated on Aug. 15, 1942, by Dunn-born Maj. Gen. William C. “Bill” Lee and is based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
