One bomb’s safety mechanisms nearly failed, stopping just short of detonation in one of the Cold War’s closest calls.

NC Prepares for Ice Storm

Gov. Josh Stein declared a state of emergency ahead of a winter storm expected to impact North Carolina this weekend. The governor urged residents to stay home when possible and prepare for potential power outages as hazardous conditions move in.

Emergency shelters have opened across the state in anticipation of the storm. A list of county emergency shelters is available here.

The declaration also waives certain transportation regulations, allowing emergency vehicles to respond statewide and helping agencies coordinate relief efforts. The ice storm is expected to begin tomorrow and affect nearly the entire state.

Duke, WakeMed End Dispute

Duke Health, WakeMed, and the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services have jointly asked the state Court of Appeals to dismiss an appeal in a Wake County certificate-of-need dispute (CON). Court filings say the parties reached a settlement resolving all claims.

The case stemmed from a fight between Duke and WakeMed over a CON to add radiation cancer treatment equipment. WakeMed last summer accused Duke of anti-competitive actions aimed at blocking its ability to offer radiation oncology services.

State regulators had awarded the CON to WakeMed in 2023, but an administrative law judge reversed that decision in 2025. With the settlement, all parties agreed to cover their own costs and requested dismissal with prejudice, ending the case permanently.

NC Plans America 250th Anniversary

North Carolina state leaders and agencies are preparing plans and initiatives to celebrate America’s 250th birthday later this year.

The General Assembly’s America 250 Committee met on January 14 to discuss plans for the year. The Celebrate America Foundation chair discussed plans for a patriotic concert to be held on July 3 in High Point.

The committee is also considering its July 4 plans, which include a reading of the Declaration of Independence and a naturalization ceremony on Capitol grounds.

The U.S. Department of Transportation stopped in Summerfield this week to show off its Freedom Trucks, a first-of-its-kind mobile museum that brings American history to communities. The trucks include interactive exhibits and historical displays.
