Article Icon 1State Leaders React to Hunt’s Passing

Many state leaders across the political spectrum are reacting to the news of former Governor Jim Hunt’s death this week.

His daughter, Lt. Gov. Rachel Hunt, said he was loving and kind and had a profound impact on the family’s life. Gov. Josh Stein said that North Carolina owes a lot of its current success to Hunt’s legacy, and that the former governor was “for North Carolina”.

Former governor Roy Cooper called Hunt “the greatest Governor in North Carolina history”. Another former governor, Pat McCrory, called Hunt “The Governor”.

Brenda Pollard, a former bank commissioner, connected with Hunt over their shared rural roots, an upbringing that shaped Hunt.

Hunt served for four terms and was known for championing education. Details about a memorial service have not yet been announced.

Article Icon 1Morrow Enters Senate Race

Republican Michele Morrow has entered the race for the 2026 election for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Thom Tillis.

Morrow established herself within the GOP after an upset win over incumbent state superintendent of schools Cathy Truitt in 2024 in the GOP primary. She ended up losing to Democrat Mo Green.

Morrow has called schools “indoctrination centers”, and opponents have noted her promotion of supposed conspiracy theories and a call for a public execution of former President Barack Obama as problematic.

She joins a crowded GOP field, joining Michael Whatley, Don Brown, Margot Dupree, Thomas Johnson, and Elizabeth Ann Temple in running for the open seat.

Article Icon 1Gov. Stein Reflects on 2025

Gov. Josh Stein reflected on his first year in office as 2025 ends, discussing successes, challenges, and his outlook for North Carolina in 2026.

Stein cited record job growth of 33,000 jobs, crediting Republican lawmakers for corporate tax cuts while saying he and prior Democratic governors laid the groundwork.

He also said tensions persist with the Trump administration and warned the federal government may not continue providing hurricane aid.

Stein said he hopes 2026 brings continued job growth, shorter DMV wait times, and increased bipartisan cooperation across state government.
