Question: What now stands on the site of the governor’s palace where William Miller lived?

Answer: The second official governor’s residence in Raleigh, where Miller once lived, stood at the site of what is now Memorial Auditorium at the south end of Fayetteville Street. Designed by architect James Calder of Washington, North Carolina, it was a large brick house with elaborate white columns. Due to a lack of funds, it was only minimally repaired and maintained.

Bonus info: Union Gen. William T. Sherman used the structure as his headquarters during the Civil War. After the war ended, the state decided to abandon the long-neglected building as the official executive residence. Memorial Auditorium was built on the site in 1932.
