Article Icon 1John Locke Foundation Challenges Trump Tariffs

The North Carolina-based John Locke Foundation partnered with the Goldwater Institute and Dallas Market Center to file an amicus brief at the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday, challenging President Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose tariffs.

The court will hear oral arguments on Nov. 5 in two combined cases: Learning Resources Inc. v. Trump and Trump v. VOS Selections Inc.

The brief argues that no genuine national emergency exists under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to justify tariffs on trade deficits and drug smuggling, which are chronic issues that can be addressed by Congress through ordinary legislation.

Even assuming an emergency, the brief contends IEEPA lacks a clear statement authorizing presidential taxation via tariffs, thereby violating constitutional norms against executive overreach, and fails the “intelligible principle” test for lacking guidelines, unlike other tariff laws.

A shooting at a large Halloween party in Maxton killed Nehemiah Locklear, 16, and Jessie Locklear Jr., 49, early Saturday. Eleven others, aged 17 to 43, suffered injuries—some critical—after a confrontation between two groups led to gunfire, with at least one person airlifted from the scene.

Deputies were originally called out for a loud music violation, but multiple calls came in reporting that people had been shot.

Robeson County Sheriff Burnis Wilkins reported that there were over 300 attendees at the party, with videos showing underage drinking and guns. At least 150 people fled before deputies arrived.

Multiple agencies are investigating this as an isolated incident and ask that anyone with information contact the authorities at 910-671-3100.

Article Icon 1DNA Test Uncovers Medical Deception

A 2022 diagnosis of Marfan syndrome and a genetic clotting disorder, absent from her family history, led 43-year-old Summer McKesson to take a 23andMe DNA test in October 2023.

The test revealed McKesson had seven half-siblings and a different biological father: Dr. Charles Peete, a Duke University physician and fertility specialist who secretly used his own sperm for inseminations during the 1980s.

An investigation confirmed Peete deceived several families, with DNA tests linking him to at least 12 children he fathered over two decades, actions Duke Health condemned after his 2013 death.

North Carolina lacks any fertility fraud laws, limiting the victims’ legal recourse.
