Article Icon 1Trump Approves Chantal Aid

The Trump administration approved $32 million in aid for areas affected by Tropical Storm Chantal, President Trump announced in a Truth Social post.

Chantal has been declared a Type I disaster, which allows for government assistance to cover housing and rental assistance, property replacement, and medical expenses, among other things.

Initial damage assessments from the tropical storm exceeded $42 million, more than twice the state’s minimum threshold for federal public assistance, Gov. Josh Stein said.

Trump praised fellow state Republicans for their efforts in securing the aid, saying they’re “bringing North Carolina back.”

Article Icon 1Zarutska Family Speaks Out

The family of Charlotte light rail stabbing victim Iryna Zarutska has begun to speak out about the tragedy in an effort to bring about change.

Iryna’s uncle said on Good Morning America that he wants to see change in how these situations are dealt with and called on leadership to take action.

Iryna fled Ukraine in 2022 and lived with her uncle and aunt in the U.S. She had come to live the American dream by working and going to veterinary school.

The video of the stabbing was released this week, causing a national outcry. The Charlotte Area Transit System proposed firmer fare enforcement as well as a stronger security presence on its routes. The Department of Justice and FBI have also filed charges against killer Decarlos Brown, Jr.

Article Icon 1Stein Touts Film Industry

Gov. Josh Stein announced that three TV series and four feature-length movies have been approved for North Carolina Film and Entertainment Grants.

Gov. Stein announced that streaming productions will create more than 3,800 jobs and generate $131.6 million, speaking at Bespoke Coffee Shop, a filming site for The Summer I Turned Pretty.

While Charlotte and Wilmington are more popular filming destinations, other spots around the state are garnering attention. In the Piedmont Triad, filming for the movie The Bard is currently wrapping up. The film, which is about the first Black published poet in the South, also received a $4.6 million grant.
