Article Icon 1Unaffiliated Voters Take Majority in WNC

Unaffiliated voters have emerged as the dominant force in Western North Carolina elections since 2022, surpassing both Democrats and Republicans.

This shift is evident in counties like Henderson, where more than 40,000 unaffiliated voters outnumber both major parties, and Buncombe, with 93,450 unaffiliated voters compared to 71,339 Democrats.

This trend is also playing out statewide, with unaffiliated voters now the largest voting bloc in North Carolina. Of nearly 7.5 million registered voters in March, more than 2.8 million were unaffiliated, 2.3 million were Democrats, and just under 2.3 million were Republicans.

Political scientist Chris Cooper attributes the rise of unaffiliated voters in Western North Carolina to a generational shift, with younger, out-of-state voters replacing older Democrats—a trend consistent across urban, rural, and suburban areas.
