Article Icon 1School Funding Sees Boost

The U.S. Department of Education released over $165 million in previously frozen funds to North Carolina. This accounts for nearly 10% of the state’s federal educational funding.

North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein thanked U.S. Secretary of Education Linda E. McMahon, a New Bern native, on social media, stating, “We shared a candid discussion about serving North Carolina’s children and families. I look forward to working together to expand workforce opportunities and making sure our kids have what they need to thrive.”

The money is expected to arrive next week.

Wake County parents had previously protested the withholding of funds, with Grace Purtell saying, “Kids don’t just magically get better without the support. It’s like you build a building without support and expect it to be around for the long haul.”

Article Icon 1‘Sunny Day’ Flooding Studied

New research shows that “sunny day” tides now flood some coastal North Carolina streets nearly a third of the year—far more often than tide gauges suggest—accelerating infrastructure damage.

It’s flooding a lot more on land than we previously thought, and it’s impacting people’s daily routines,” said Katherine Anarde, a coastal engineer at North Carolina State University.

The Sunny Day Flooding Project seeks to understand the causes and impacts of chronic flooding from the ocean tides on streets and storm drains in North Carolina.

Communities are considering strategies to help, including higher minimum bulkhead elevations, floodwater pumps, drainage canals, or other flood barriers.
