Answer: The American Dance Festival, which has been held at Duke University in Durham since 1978, was founded in 1934 at the Bennington School of the Dance in Bennington, Vermont. Several notable figures in modern dance founded the festival: Martha Graham, Hanya Holm, Doris Humphrey, and Charles Weidman. In 1939, the festival was held for one season at Mills College in Oakland, California. From 1948 to 1978, it was held at Connecticut College before moving to its current location at Duke in 1978.
