The Roundup

Article Icon 1Cary Among Top Job Markets

Cary ranked No. 7 among cities with the most desirable job markets, recognized for its remote work-friendly environment and livability.

The study analyzed 348 cities based on unemployment, wage growth, median earnings, commute times, and private healthcare coverage.

Cary currently has an unemployment rate of 3.50%, as well as median earnings of $47,203, with a 23.13% income growth from 2020 to 2023. The study found that 86.63% of residents have employer-sponsored health insurance, and housing costs consume 30.29% of income.

Bend, Oregon, ranked first on the list, followed by Richmond and Seattle. Bellevue, Washington, and Carmel, Indiana, rounded out the top five.

Article Icon 1Duke Journal Facing Backlash

The Duke Law Journal is accused of favoring minority applicants by encouraging them to highlight race and gender in personal statements, allegedly awarding extra points for such disclosures.

Each year, the journal hosts a two-week-long competition that requires applicants to write a 12-page memo analyzing an appellate court decision and a 500-word essay.

Minority students were supplied with a rubric ahead of the process indicating that they would receive up to 10 extra points if they wrote about their membership in an underrepresented group.

Some have noted that the school could be in violation of the Civil Rights Act, a law the school must comply with as it receives federal funding.

Article Icon 1Beer Shop Owner Charged With Embezzlement

The owner of the popular Salud Beer Shop and Salud Cerveceria in the NoDa neighborhood of Charlotte has been arrested on embezzlement charges.

Jason Scott Glunt faces nine felony embezzlement counts for allegedly taking $440,000 in state and county taxes between mid-2015 and 2019 and again from 2021 through 2024.

Investigators say that Glunt kept sales tax collected from customers instead of remitting it to the state and county.

Salud Beer Shop has been a fixture of NoDa and was previously ranked as America’s top beer shop in 2019.
