The Roundup

Article Icon 14 Days of Triple-Digit Temps Start Today

A high-pressure system lingering over the eastern U.S. will create four straight days of triple-digit temperatures in parts of central North Carolina starting today.

Temperatures haven’t been this high in the Triangle since July 2012. The heat index—which measures how hot it feels when humidity is factored in—is expected to range between 102 and 110 degrees.

The Triad will also get scorched, with heat index values reaching up to 104 degrees.

Doctors advise staying hydrated, limiting time outdoors when possible, wearing lightweight clothing, working outside early in the day, keeping pets’ water bowls filled, and avoiding afternoon pet walks. Those most at risk of heat-related illnesses include young children, older adults, people with chronic medical conditions, and pregnant women.

North Carolina politicians responded quickly to President Trump’s airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites Saturday evening, dubbed “Operation Midnight Hammer.”

Both of the state’s U.S. senators praised the strike, with Sen. Ted Budd, R-N.C., saying it was a “decisive blow to Iran’s nuclear program,” and Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., calling it “the right decision.”

Several U.S. representatives from North Carolina also weighed in. Rep. Don Davis, D-N.C., posted that “a nuclear-armed Iran poses a dire threat” not only to the United States but also to Israel and the entire international community.

Rep. Richard Hudson, R-N.C., thanked Trump, cautioned Iran against retaliation, and said, “America leads with resolve, and the world is safer when we do.”

As of Sunday afternoon, Gov. Josh Stein had not released a statement about the strike.

Repairs to I-40 near the Tennessee-North Carolina border, which remains closed in both directions due to a rockslide and flooding at mile marker 450, could cost $500,000 and take at least two weeks, while crews clear debris and assess slope stability.

Heavy rain triggered the rockslide in the same area that was damaged during Hurricane Helene. Tennessee transportation officials say the damage “is not as extensive,” and no injuries have been reported.

North Carolina troopers are intensifying patrols along the state’s section of the interstate to prevent truckers from sidestepping the recommended detour via I-81 North to I-26 East after some followed GPS routes through rural Madison County on winding roads not recommended for large trucks.
