Article Icon 1US Supreme Court Ruling Could Impact NC Case

North Carolina State Treasurer Brad Briner believes the U.S. Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision on Wednesday upholding Tennessee’s ban on transgender teen treatments supports the state’s position on a longstanding case involving medical treatments for transgender patients.

The North Carolina case, Kadel v. Folwell, challenges the exclusion of transition-related medical procedures and medications from the State Health Plan. In 2016, the plan temporarily covered those treatments for one year before reinstating the longstanding exclusion.

In April 2024, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ordered the plan to resume coverage, affirming a 2022 lower court ruling

While the Supreme Court has not yet issued a decision in the North Carolina case, Briner’s office anticipates that the court’s ruling on the Tennessee case, United States v. Skrmetti, will lead to an order reversing the 4th Circuit’s decision mandating coverage.

Article Icon 1Lawmakers Act to Back Camping World’s Flag

In a show of support for Camping World regarding recent flag size violations, North Carolina lawmakers revised House Bill 926 on Tuesday to limit city regulations on private property flag displays.

Prompted by the City of Greenville’s lawsuit against Camping World over a 3,200-square-foot American flag on a 130-foot pole, the revised bill prohibits cities from restricting U.S. or North Carolina flag sizes or flagpole heights without proof that the health and safety of the community are at risk.

The controversy began in October 2024 when Greenville cited Camping World for violating a city code that regulates flag size and began issuing $250 daily fines in January 2025. The city seeks an injunction and $21,700 in unpaid fines.

House Bill 926 authorizes NCDOT to determine if the flag or flagpole causes traffic-based concerns. If the bill passes, all citations, penalties, and lawsuits related to Camping World’s flag will be abated.
