Article Icon 1Trump Lifts Ban on Overland Supersonic Flights

Colorado-based Boom Supersonic—the builder of a “superfactory” at Piedmont Triad International Airport—is celebrating an executive order signed by President Trump on June 6 that directs the FAA to lift its decades-old ban on overland supersonic flights in the U.S.

Backed by North Carolina U.S. Senators Ted Budd and Thom Tillis, the order aims to remove regulatory barriers to advancing supersonic aviation technology so “U.S. companies can dominate supersonic flight once again.”

Current regulations, set in 1973, allow only military aircraft to break the sound barrier over U.S. land due to the sonic boom’s potential to damage ground property.

Earlier this year, Boom Supersonic conducted test flights with its XB-1 jet, which broke the sound barrier without creating an audible boom. The company will build engines for its supersonic Overture jet at the new Greensboro site, where it expects to employ more than 1,700 people.

Article Icon 1State Opposes Sunday Hunting Appeal

State government lawyers are urging the North Carolina Supreme Court to reject an appeal filed by plaintiff Tim Oates challenging restrictions on Sunday hunting.

North Carolina banned firearm hunting on Sundays until 2017, when Gov. Roy Cooper signed House Bill 559, allowing it with some restrictions. Oates argues those restrictions violate North Carolinians’ constitutional right to hunt and fish based on an amendment voters passed in 2018.

The North Carolina Court of Appeals issued a unanimous decision on April 16 upholding the General Assembly’s authority to impose such restrictions.

In a motion to dismiss filed Thursday, North Carolina Solicitor General Nick Brod wrote that “this right is not absolute” because it is subject to “laws enacted by the General Assembly.”

Article Icon 1NC Real Estate Inventory Shifts

North Carolina’s housing market is experiencing a notable inventory increase, ranking 15th in growth between 2019 and 2025. The state also placed among the top four nationwide for year-over-year growth between May 2024 and May 2025, with inventory jumping 49.5% during that period.

While Wake County’s real estate market remains steady overall, some zip codes—27529 (Garner), 27560 (Morrisville), 27605 (Raleigh), and 27502 (Apex)—have seen inventory surges, some by over 70%, due to increasing job opportunities.

Greensboro City Manager Trey Davis says that more than 32,000 housing units will be needed in Guilford County over the next five years to accommodate growth related to job opportunities at companies like HondaJet and Boom Supersonic.

News of housing inventory growth follows a February report by the NC Chamber Foundation projecting a 764,478-unit housing shortage across North Carolina through 2029, driven by job and population growth.
