Answer: The Mountains-to-Sea State Trail is North Carolina’s flagship trail. Proposed in 1977 by Howard Lee, then Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Community Development, the trail became a unit within the state parks system in 2000. In 2017, the General Assembly authorized the addition of the Coastal Crescent route that loops through southeastern North Carolina.
