Question: What is North Carolina’s flagship state trail?

Answer: The Mountains-to-Sea State Trail is North Carolina’s flagship trail. Proposed in 1977 by Howard Lee, then Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Community Development, the trail became a unit within the state parks system in 2000. In 2017, the General Assembly authorized the addition of the Coastal Crescent route that loops through southeastern North Carolina. Currently, 675 miles of the trail’s planned 1,400 miles are completed and designated. Learn more about the trail here.
