Question: Why did General Johnston choose Bennett Place as the meeting point for negotiating a Civil War surrender with General Sherman?

Answer: Johnston proposed meeting Sherman at Bennett Place because it was halfway between both armies. Johnston’s troops were positioned from Hillsborough to Greensboro and as far south as Salisbury and Charlotte, while Sherman’s troops were mainly encamped in and around Raleigh when the papers were signed.
