Question: When did North Carolina enter the ferry business?

Answer: North Carolina entered the ferry business after World War II. At that time, the state bought out the Thomas A. Baum operations at Alligator River and Croatan Sound, the Toby Tillet operations at Oregon Inlet, and the Frazier Peele operations at Hatteras Inlet. Those routes evolved as bridges were built and additional runs were established.
